African ebony (wood)
African ebony is very black. It is a precious wood, which comes to us from tropical Africa. It is a dense wood. Small white veins may be visible in the wood (Gabon).

The word “ebony” has given rise to the French word “ébéniste”, denoting someone who makes period furniture.
African ebony shafts are not varnished. The wood is finished by a polishing process.
